Gestalt Therapy:
Awareness, Presence,
& Connection

An approach grounded in awareness, presence, and connection

Move beyond just managing symptoms.

Reconnect with yourself through a deeply human, present-moment approach.

What is Gestalt therapy

Gestalt therapy focuses on present-moment awareness. It invites you to notice what is happening in your thoughts, emotions, body, and relationships as it unfolds.

Rather than analysing or diagnosing, we stay close to your direct experience. This might include how you speak, what you feel in your body, or patterns that show up in your relationships and daily life.

As awareness grows, so does choice. You begin to understand your needs more clearly, recognise patterns that may no longer support you, and respond in ways that feel more aligned with who you are.

This approach is not about fixing or forcing change. It is about creating space to explore and gently reconnect with yourself.

Over time, this can support a more grounded and authentic way of being.

How Gestalt therapy
supports your mental health

Counselling offers a space to bring awareness into everyday life, especially in moments where you may feel overwhelmed, reactive, or unsure how to respond.

Gestalt therapy supports you to recognise patterns as they show up in real time, whether in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, or responses to stress. Rather than trying to change these immediately, we first work to understand them.

This can be especially helpful when navigating anxiety, burnout, relationship challenges, or life transitions, where patterns often feel automatic or difficult to shift.

Through this process, many people begin to notice:

• Greater clarity in how they respond to stress and pressure
• More choice in their reactions, rather than feeling stuck in familiar patterns
• A deeper understanding of their needs and boundaries
• More connection and honesty in their relationships

Alongside this, we integrate practical ways of supporting yourself, so the awareness developed in sessions can carry into daily life.

A Holistic and Relational approach

Gestalt therapy looks at the whole picture, your thoughts, emotions, body, relationships, and environment, rather than separating them into parts.

Instead of focusing only on symptoms, we explore how your experiences are shaped by your wider context. This includes your relationships, past experiences, and the environments you move through each day.

Using ideas from field theory, we consider how you are influenced by, and in relationship with, the world around you. This can help bring awareness to patterns that may not be immediately obvious, but are quietly shaping how you feel and respond.

The therapeutic relationship is central to this approach. The way we relate in the room becomes part of the work itself, offering a space to notice patterns, explore new ways of responding, and experience something different.

This is not about being analysed or fixed. It is about being met with presence, curiosity, and respect, while creating space to understand yourself more fully.

What to Expect in our sessions

We begin with what is happening now.

Rather than needing to have everything figured out, you’re invited to bring whatever is present, whether that’s a specific challenge, a sense of overwhelm, or something harder to name. From there, we gently explore what is unfolding in the moment.

Together, we notice thoughts, emotions, and body cues, and how they connect to your current experience. This might include how you respond in certain situations, what feels difficult to express, or patterns that show up in your relationships and daily life.

This is a collaborative process. I sit beside you, supporting awareness and curiosity, rather than directing or interpreting your experience.

When useful, we may explore:

• Present-moment awareness and gentle experiments to deepen insight
• Two-chair or empty-chair dialogue to explore different parts of yourself
• Somatic noticing and grounding practices to support connection with your body
• Practical, CBT-informed tools to bring clarity and support into daily life

At times, sessions may feel reflective and spacious. At other times, they may bring up emotion or new awareness. Both are part of the process.

We check in together along the way, allowing space for what is emerging, while also keeping a sense of direction that feels meaningful to you.

Unfinished business and integration

At times, we carry experiences, emotions, or patterns that were never fully processed or understood.

These may show up as recurring reactions, tension in the body, or ways of relating that once helped you cope, but no longer feel supportive. Often, they’re not obvious at first, but they can influence how you respond to situations, relationships, and yourself.

In Gestalt therapy, we gently bring these experiences into awareness, not to force change, but to understand them more fully.

This might include noticing what feels unresolved, what has been pushed aside, or what continues to repeat. As these experiences are acknowledged, there can be more space to respond differently, with greater clarity and choice.

We honour the ways these patterns have supported you, while creating the conditions for something new to emerge, in a way that feels respectful and manageable.

FAQs - Gestalt Counselling

Q: What makes Gestalt therapy different?
A: Gestalt therapy focuses on what is happening in the present moment, rather than analysing or diagnosing from a distance. It invites you to notice your thoughts, emotions, body, and patterns as they arise, helping you understand yourself more fully and respond with greater awareness.

Q: What happens if I don’t know what to talk about?
A: You don’t need to arrive with a clear plan. We can begin with whatever feels present, even if that’s uncertainty, a sense of being stuck, or not knowing where to start. Often, this is where meaningful awareness begins.

Q: Is there a structure to Gestalt therapy?
A: Gestalt therapy is less structured than some approaches, but it is not without direction. We begin with what is present and follow what emerges in the moment, while staying connected to what feels important for you. This allows the work to remain relevant and grounded in your experience, rather than following a fixed agenda.

Q: Can Gestalt therapy still offer practical support?
A: Yes. Alongside awareness, we can explore practical ways of responding to situations in your daily life. This might include noticing patterns in real time, experimenting with different responses, or integrating simple tools that support clarity and self-regulation.
